Nipples are bright red and painful.?

A couple months ago, my nipple started to bleed slightly so I put a bandaid on it. When I took off the bandaid after a day or two, the bleeding was gone but the area on/surrounding the nipple was scaly? And bright red. Does anyone have any idea what is going on?
