Skin irritation problem?

For the past few months I have had a patch of skin on my back that is tender and feels like it's constantly burning, although to look at there was no distinctive marking or redness. In artifical light I cannot see anything at all but in real light I have noticed very small red blotches in certain areas of my back but not actually in the area where it burns. It's really hard to examine your own back but from what I can see there is nothing there that warrants the pain and burning sensation I am feeling. Does anyone have any idea of what this could be? I have noticed that my skin has a very dry, scaly or leathery texture to it but not at any noticeable extreme, just close up the skin appears dry all over. I am going to my doctor this week, but she can be quite dismissive so I had wanted to get some suggestions for possible reasons before I went?
